Since the start of Bassetlaw’s first mental health support group which formed in December 2021, the group has grown from strength to strength.
A great example of this is one of our members Paul, he came to the group in a not so good place. Since joining the group Paul has sorted several problems in his life, personal and work wise giving himself a different outlook on his life.
The group has expanded to over 10 members and the transitions people have gone through reflects the great work done within the group.
Back at the start of the year Paul came to the group for help and guidance. His mental health took it’s role on him after going through a divorce, a heart condition and failing business due to COVID.
Because of the longevity of his wait to see a specialist, he felt himself slipping into a dark place. His mental health was deteriorating and he required immediate help.
After seeing the poster for In Sam’s Name Paul decided to fight his alter ego and come to a meeting with one of his friends.
Following on from his first couple of sessions at In Sam’s Name, Paul decided to go on the monthly Sunday walk with the group.
The biggest positives he took from the walk was the different surroundings compared to the meetings. He felt apart of the group after meeting other members and learned what they were going through as well.
Paul’s journey wasn’t an easy ride with many bumps along the way, at the start of his time with the group there were major obstacles for him to overcome after feeling helpless and suicidal.
To get himself out of that mindset he went to A&E for help and he was placed on the mental health ward, where he stayed for two weeks.
Since leaving the hospital Paul’s state of mind had a reboot. He carried on with the talking therapy and was on medication while attending the sessions at In Sam’s Name.
Finally Paul started to hear good news from his cardiologist in relation to his heart condition. During this time Paul gained assistance with his personal and business debt. Which in affect made him feel more confident and hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
More good news followed with Paul securing a permanent job and managing to finally get a place to call his own.
Fast forward to September 2022, Paul is back to the person he was before he started coming to the group. Despite the great recovery he has made, Paul is always looking to improve his state of mind by staying in a positive mental space.
Taking that approach to life, while also coming off his medication and the therapy shows he has gained the control back in his life.
This is a great example of the impact In Sam’s Name has had on the members, it has shown in the Bassetlaw area that support groups like this one benefits people.
